Is Apple Intelligence On-Device or in the Cloud? How to Check the Privacy Report

Last updated: September 9, 2026

Quick Take: Apple Intelligence can process supported requests on the device and use Private Cloud Compute when a task requires more computational capacity. On a compatible iPhone, the Apple Intelligence Report can show activity involving Private Cloud Compute during the selected 15-minute or seven-day period.

“On-device AI” is often treated as a simple privacy label, but a modern phone may use more than one processing path. Apple Intelligence decides whether a request can be handled on the iPhone and can route more complex work to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system.

What on-device processing means

On-device processing runs the relevant model and computation on the iPhone. It can reduce the need to send personal context to a remote server and may allow certain features to operate without a network connection.

It does not mean that every Apple Intelligence feature is completely offline. A feature may still need current internet information, a download, or another online service. Availability also varies by device, operating-system version, language, and region.

What Private Cloud Compute does

Apple says that requests needing greater computational capacity can use larger server-based models running on Apple silicon. According to Apple’s documentation, only data relevant to the request is processed and then removed; Apple states that the data is not stored or made accessible to the company.

Apple also describes security measures including Secure Enclave, verified boot components, attestation, and software images that independent security researchers can inspect. These are Apple’s published architectural and policy claims, not a promise that an AI-generated answer will always be correct.

How to enable the Apple Intelligence Report

  1. Open Settings on the iPhone.
  2. Select Privacy & Security.
  3. Open Apple Intelligence Report.
  4. Choose a report duration of the last 15 minutes or 7 days.
  5. Select Export Activity when you want to save the report.

The exported file is named Apple_Intelligence_Report.json. JSON is a structured text format and can be opened with a text editor or code editor.

What an empty report does—and does not—mean

An empty report does not necessarily mean Apple Intelligence was unused. Apple notes that the report may contain no entries when no Private Cloud Compute request occurred after the duration was selected. A request completed on the device should not be interpreted as a cloud event simply because an AI feature was used.

The report is also not a packet-capture tool. It does not replace a security audit, independently prove every implementation detail, or verify the factual accuracy of an AI response.

Privacy checks worth making

  • Keep iOS updated to a supported, stable release.
  • Review which apps can access photos, contacts, the microphone, and location.
  • Distinguish Apple Intelligence processing from optional third-party services or extensions.
  • Store an exported report securely if it contains activity you consider sensitive.
  • Verify important AI-generated summaries, instructions, and decisions against authoritative sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Apple Intelligence always on-device?

No. Apple describes on-device processing as its foundation, but more complex requests can use Private Cloud Compute.

Can the report tell me whether every AI feature went online?

It is designed to report Private Cloud Compute activity for the selected period. It should not be treated as a complete record of every network request made by the phone or by third-party services.

Why do the menu options look different on my iPhone?

The feature requires compatible hardware and supported software, language, and regional settings. Apple also notes that not every Apple Intelligence feature is available in every language or region.
