What Is Suzi? How Long-Range Zigbee Differs From Matter

Last updated: September 8, 2026

The Connectivity Standards Alliance opened its Suzi Product Certification Program on September 2, 2026. Despite the new name, Suzi is not a replacement smart-home ecosystem. It is a sub-GHz extension of Zigbee designed for longer-range, low-power mesh networking.

Quick Take
Suzi extends Zigbee into sub-GHz frequency bands to improve range, wall penetration, and reliability in difficult RF environments. It complements traditional 2.4 GHz Zigbee rather than replacing it. Matter addresses IP-based device interoperability, so a Suzi label does not automatically mean Matter compatibility.

What Suzi adds to Zigbee

Traditional Zigbee devices commonly use the 2.4 GHz band to form low-power mesh networks. Suzi builds on Zigbee’s established network layer while adding operation in lower-frequency sub-GHz bands.

Lower frequencies can improve propagation across longer distances and through walls or other obstacles. The Alliance identifies approximately 900 MHz in North America and 800 MHz in Europe as regional examples. Potential uses include detached garages, outdoor sensors, multi-story buildings, utilities, industrial monitoring, and large commercial properties.

Technology Primary role Buyer should verify
2.4 GHz Zigbee Low-power local mesh networking Hub and device-profile compatibility
Suzi Longer-range sub-GHz Zigbee mesh Regional band, certification, and bridge support
Matter IP-based smart-home interoperability Platform, device type, and network transport

Does Suzi replace existing Zigbee?

No. The Alliance describes Suzi as an extension that can operate alongside existing 2.4 GHz Zigbee networks. Dual-band coordinators and bridge devices can connect traditional and extended-range network segments, allowing an installation to expand gradually.

That does not mean every current Zigbee bulb or sensor can become a Suzi device through a software update. A product may need a compatible sub-GHz radio, firmware, certification, and a hub or bridge that supports the intended network design.

Is Suzi a competitor to Matter?

The technologies operate at different parts of the smart-home stack. Matter is an IP-based protocol designed to let compatible devices and ecosystems work together. It uses supported IP networking technologies such as Wi-Fi and Thread, with Bluetooth Low Energy used during commissioning.

Suzi focuses on extending Zigbee mesh connectivity over sub-GHz radio. A Suzi-certified product is not automatically a Matter device, and a Matter-certified product does not automatically support Suzi. Connecting the two environments requires a hub or bridge that explicitly advertises that capability.

What the new certification program means

The September 2026 announcement means manufacturers can certify eligible Suzi products through the Alliance’s program. Certification is intended to test requirements such as interoperability, security, and expected implementation behavior.

It does not mean that a broad selection of consumer products is already available at retail. Before purchasing, check:

  • Whether the exact model appears in the CSA certified-product database
  • Whether it supports the sub-GHz band permitted in your region
  • Whether your hub supports Suzi or an appropriate dual-band bridge
  • Whether the device works with your existing automation platform
  • Whether the advertised compatibility requires a separate gateway

Who is most likely to benefit?

Suzi is most relevant where ordinary indoor mesh coverage becomes difficult: a sensor at the edge of a large property, equipment in a detached structure, outdoor lighting, agricultural monitoring, or devices spread across multiple floors. A small apartment with reliable existing Zigbee coverage may see little immediate reason to replace working equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add a Suzi device to my current Zigbee hub?

Only if the hub or a compatible bridge explicitly supports Suzi and the correct regional frequency band. A generic Zigbee logo is not enough to confirm support.

Should I delay buying Matter devices because of Suzi?

Not solely because Suzi exists. Matter and Suzi solve different problems. Choose Matter for verified ecosystem interoperability and consider Suzi when extended-range Zigbee connectivity is an actual requirement.
