Bluetooth Channel Sounding: What Distance Awareness Adds

Bluetooth Channel Sounding is a feature designed to give connected devices more precise information about how far apart they are. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group, or SIG, announced it on September 3, 2024, highlighting item finding and digital keys as possible applications. A Bluetooth connection tells devices that they can communicate. Distance awareness adds a different piece of information: how close the devices are to one another.

Why would a device need distance information?

Consider a tag attached to a set of keys. Knowing that the tag is nearby is helpful, but it may leave a person searching the final few steps around a room. Distance information can help a finding experience indicate whether the user is moving closer. Bluetooth SIG discussed tags for keys, wallets, backpacks and luggage, as well as finding functions embedded in other Bluetooth devices.

Distance can also matter when a device acts as a digital key. Bluetooth SIG described a lock that opens only when an authorized device is within a selected distance. Its examples included cars, doors, gates, safes and bikes. These are possible uses for developers. They are not a claim that every product in those categories already supports Channel Sounding.

How does Channel Sounding measure range?

Bluetooth SIG said Channel Sounding uses phase based ranging, or PBR, to measure distance between connected devices. In broad terms, it uses information from radio signals to estimate separation. SIG described centimeter level accuracy over considerable distances as a capability of the technology. That statement should not be read as a universal accuracy guarantee for every product, room or operating condition.

The distinction matters because a specification describes what a technology can enable, while a finished experience depends on implementation. A buyer deciding whether a particular tracker will help locate keys needs the product’s supported features, not just a broad claim about Bluetooth.

Why does security appear in the announcement?

A digital key needs to establish more than whether a device presents an authorized identity. It also needs to make sensible use of proximity. Bluetooth SIG described a second ranging method, round trip time based distance bounding, as part of Channel Sounding’s layered security. The stated purpose is to add protection against sophisticated relay attacks, in which signals are forwarded so that devices appear closer than they really are.

This does not mean distance measurement alone settles every security question. It means Channel Sounding was designed with both fine ranging and a way to strengthen confidence in the measured distance. The way an individual lock or vehicle applies that information is part of its product design.

What does Bluetooth 6.0 tell us?

Bluetooth Channel Sounding is among the features included in Bluetooth Core Specification Version 6.0. A feature’s presence in a specification does not establish that every existing Bluetooth phone, tag or lock offers it. For a real use case, the devices at both ends and the application need relevant support. Product documentation is the place to check whether a particular pairing provides the intended finding or key function.

Bluetooth SIG emphasized that developers could add distance awareness to Bluetooth devices without designing in an additional radio technology. That is an engineering opportunity described by the organization, not a promise that all devices gain the feature automatically. It also does not tell a user exactly how a manufacturer will present distance on a screen or decide when to unlock.

How to assess a product claim

  • Identify the use: locating an item and granting access are different tasks.
  • Check both devices: confirm that the relevant phone, tag, lock or vehicle supports the intended function.
  • Read the conditions: look for how the product uses distance and when an alert or unlock occurs.
  • Separate the levels of claim: a capability described by Bluetooth SIG is not necessarily the measured result of a specific product.

Channel Sounding makes proximity information available for more useful behavior. The practical question is how a particular pair of devices uses that information. Bluetooth SIG’s 2024 announcement explains the technical foundation and potential applications; a product’s own documentation determines what a user can actually do with it.
